What is heart rate variability, and why is it mentioned in breathwork?

A careful explanation of beat-to-beat variation, how breathing shapes it, and why a higher number is not the personal score wearables make it look like.

Heart rate variability — HRV — turns up constantly in breathwork talk and on wearables, usually with the implication that bigger is better and that your number grades you. The reality is more nuanced and, honestly, more reassuring. This explains what HRV actually is, why breathing is so tied to it, and why treating the figure as a personal high score leads you astray more often than it helps.

What HRV actually measures

Despite the name, a healthy heart does not beat like a metronome. The time between consecutive beats constantly varies by small amounts, and HRV is simply a measure of that variation. It is counterintuitive at first: more variability generally reflects a flexible, responsive system, while a very rigid, metronomic beat is usually the less adaptable state. HRV is a window onto how your autonomic nervous system is modulating the heart from moment to moment — not a measure of how fast it beats.

Why breathing is so tied to it

Here is the breathwork connection. A good chunk of normal HRV is driven by breathing itself: heart rate naturally speeds slightly on each inhale and slows on each exhale, a pattern called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. When you breathe slowly and evenly, those breath-linked swings become larger and more visible, which is why slow paced breathing reliably increases certain HRV measures during a session. The breath is not just correlated with HRV — it is one of its main moment-to-moment drivers.

Why a higher number is not a score

Because devices display HRV as a single number, it is tempting to treat it like a test result to maximise. Resist that. Within a session, slow breathing inflates the respiratory component almost on demand — so a "high" reading while you breathe slowly mostly confirms that you are breathing slowly, not that something profound improved. Chasing the figure also tends to add the very tension that works against calm. Practise for how the breathing feels; let any number be a side effect, not the goal.

Why your numbers jump around

HRV is genuinely noisy. It shifts with age, sleep, hydration, recent movement, caffeine, illness, time of day, your position, and the measurement method itself. Two readings hours apart can differ a lot for completely ordinary reasons. If you do track it, only compare like with like — same time, same posture, same conditions — and even then expect wide natural swings. A single reading tells you very little; a trend under consistent conditions tells you a bit more.

Devices are estimates, not instruments

Consumer wearables estimate HRV; they are not clinical instruments, and their accuracy varies with fit, motion, and algorithm. That is fine for a rough personal trend, but it means an alarming-looking number is far more likely to be measurement noise than a medical finding. Do not self-diagnose from a watch. Unexpected readings paired with real symptoms — not the number alone — are what deserve a conversation with a qualified professional.

A calm takeaway

HRV is the small, natural variation between heartbeats, and breathing is one of its biggest moment-to-moment influences — which is why breathwork keeps mentioning it. But slow breathing inflates the figure almost by definition, the number is noisy and condition-dependent, and consumer devices only estimate it. Let HRV be an interesting bit of context, practise for comfort rather than a reading, and take real symptoms to a clinician rather than a wearable.
